Course Description

This course has been designed for individuals who are either already involved in the fitness and sport industry or are looking to get involved. The unique design of this course makes it accessible for individuals of varying backgrounds. The course starts with an introduction to periodisation, where various aspects covered will assist in the development of a better understanding of what periodisation is, how it may benefit a player or team and how a training programme should be constructed. The course then shifts to the need of periodisation in football, how periodisation can be applied to resistance (gym-based) and field conditioning training sessions, while monitoring the footballers as to ensure that adequate recovery is afforded so that the training objectives are achieved.  

The course will also cover fitness testing for football and provide normative data which will be helpful in rating players at different performance levels. Each of the modules in this course has been structured in a way as to condense the most valuable knowledge from the topic being covered without omitting any vital aspects of programme design for football. This is a time-efficient way to gain an understanding of the theory behind planning a periodised training programme for football, with the aid of examples which are provided to furthermore increase the quality of learning.

What will I learn?  

1. You will gain the knowledge of how a proper periodised training programme should be designed.
2. You will receive the tools to develop your very own annual training plan based on a blueprint model.
3. Discover how to assess a football team based on sporting requirements and athlete needs.
4. Gain an understanding of the importance of the various phases of a season.
5. Learn how to create a football-specific physiological testing battery.
6. Develop the skills to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a footballer, and how to improve on the weaknesses while capitalising on the strengths
7. Learn how to effectively manage the training workloads throughout a training cycle.
8. Expand on your knowledge of the importance of athlete monitoring.
9. Learn how to make modifications to your training sessions as to address the training goals for different players.
10. Learn how the training workloads for beginner, intermediate and advanced footballers vary.

Assessments 

Each module will have four multiple choice questions. Students will have unlimited attempts to answer these questions. A certificate of completion will be issued once all of the assessments have been completed.

Requirements

No previous experience and knowledge is required. However, if the learner is familiar with endurance sports- particularly running- they will benefit more from the course..

Rodet Yila

Biokineticist

After playing football (at an amateur level) for several years, and acquiring BSc Exercise Science and BSc (Hons) Biokinetics degrees at the University of the Western Cape, Rodet turned his attention to working with football teams, initially as the Youth Strength & Conditioning coach of one of South Africa's prominent football academies. Rodet has since then worked with various age groups, which included differing playing levels, ranging from beginners through to advanced. Currently an employee of the High Performance Centre of the Sports Science Institute of South Africa, it is Rodet's passion for injury prevention and high performance which has contributed to the creativity in his training programme designs, which allow for the athlete's needs to be kept as the overall priority of training.

Justin Durandt

MSc Med (Exercise Science), Biokineticist

Justin Durandt, previously the Manager of the Education Hub at the Sport Science Institute of South Africa.  Justin  has  had  the  privilege  of  being  the  conditioning specialist  for  the  South  African  national  cricket,  soccer,  hockey  and  Olympic team. In 2013 he served on the national high performance advisory for the South African Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC).Justin has consulted to a number of federations on talent identification and development. Justin has a Masters in talent identification and development from the Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine, Department of Human Biology, UCT. His research interests include talent identification, development and performance. He has published several sport specific papers related to cricket, soccer, rugby and hockey.
